You handled that like a pro. Very clear, well formed arguments. You definitely came across as the better researched debater, and I learned some great stuff by listening. Thank you!

I remember finding Dr Greger's site a while ago and at first I thought it was interesting and I learned a few things, but I quickly disregarded it when I heard him blatantly misrepresenting (or misunderstanding) some research on his little Youtube videos. So I got a little pleasure from listening to you run knowledge circles around him. You are measured in your response, showed a knowledge base for the studies in question, and respectfully pointed out the shortcomings in study design - he could not refute your observations, and had to appeal to emotion "getting rid of the biggest killer....." type of verbiage.
Kudos to you!!!Newbiehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10011973668875349690noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5977689274110133568.post-60308741307989385682014-02-03T08:25:55.742-08:002014-02-03T08:25:55.742-08:00I don't quite understand the point in debating...I don't quite understand the point in debating with vegans/vegetarians. It seems like a waste of time, money and other resources, like the amount of psychic energy arguing consumes. It is just banging your head against a wall of obstinance, since these people have the same basic mentality as religious fundamentalists. No matter how many points you raise, ultimately they are not going to listen. or digest if they do listen, because they see themselves as already having a lock on the truth. So, while prominent vegetarians may discuss calcium and B12 in a measured manner, their "flock" just accepts what is said as proof that their own attitudes were accurate all along, paying absolutely no attention to the points raised by the "opposition."

Trying to speak to people outside this debate about vegetarianism is usually futile, also, because they sympathize with the vegetarians, seeing vegetarians as being as morally strong as they should be but can't be due to being "weak." "I wish I could make a commitment to being vegetarian, ideally vegan, but I just don't have what it takes." I've heard that so many times that I don't bother trying to discuss it with them.

Most people don't understand evolution, so they don't understand any arguments in favor of how it might indicate how we should structure our diet, exercise or health. Their eyes glaze over and they start quoting the people who think that our digestive tract somehow is the same as that of herbivores. "Look, our molars are the same shape as those of cows." Then they head for the doctor or herbalist to "fix" them if they get sick. Or if they are really sick, they go raw vegan and lo and behold, they get better! They fail to notice that they have stopped eating grains, beans, vegetable oils, potatoes and other tubers, and any other vegetables that can't be eaten raw, but they do notice that they aren't eating meat and of course, that is the sole reason they feel better.

Of course, they now eat like other herbivores, that is, constantly, in a desperate attempt to get adequate nutrition. A friend has a bowl of salad with her at all times, which she is able to renew repeatedly, since she works in the kitchen of a restaurant. I suggested she stay on her raw vegan diet except for some raw milk, raw eggs and some raw beef carpaccio, and see what happens, you know, experiment for a month, but no way, Jose, it was the meat that made me sick in the first place. I just leave her alone now, except for a mild comment when she turns orange from too much carrot juice or if I see her rubbing her sore jaw where her teeth are decaying.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5977689274110133568.post-64386330729534152302014-02-03T06:43:36.584-08:002014-02-03T06:43:36.584-08:00Chris, regarding lead in bones and consequent lead...Chris, regarding lead in bones and consequent lead in bone broth: if bones used are not pastured (chicken in particular), but "better quality" such as Whole Foods level 2, would lead still be a concern? The study you mentioned finding zero lead in the bone broth used the ideal pastured animal which many do not have access to nor are they able to afford. Any insights/thoughts? Also, did the study finding lead in bone broth use CAFO animals, and was it chicken or beef bones? After some thought, I came up with: several types of kale, some of them very different (like black and red kale); also watercress including a dark watercress, romaine lettuce, cabbage, bok choy and broccolini, broccoli and endive are a few that come to mind, but there are a number of asian greens, like baby bok choi, gai lan, etc that I don't know the names of in English off-hand. If you are more into wild and more exotic items: garlic mustard, basil, parsley, cilantro, sage, thyme (not that you'd eat a large quantity from of the herb category), drumstick and fennugreek (the latter common in Indian cooking, also called methi). I rather suspect that some kale and some almonds would pack an excellent serving of calcium. I found a recipe for tomato, kale and almond soup which is easy to make and extraordinarily good (its in the book Vegan on $4 a day).Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5977689274110133568.post-2666929050929333862014-02-02T22:13:24.597-08:002014-02-02T22:13:24.597-08:00I agree.
