My Pocast Interview With The Blogger Formerly Known As Low-Carb Hank

The Blogger Formerly Known As Low-Carb Hank just posted a pocast interview we did together up at Hank's Journey:
Chris Masterjohn Interview, LCJ Podcast #38
We discuss vegetarianism, how I got where I am, AHS, the WAPF's stance on grains, dietary dogmatism, self-experimentation, fructose, and more.  Hank was a gracious host and I'm thankful I got to be on his show.  We had a great time together.

I was on three hours sleep when I did the interview, so I made a couple tiny errors of omission during our discussion of fructose metabolism.  In particular, I would add to the list of people who might benefit from fructose-restriction those who do not absorb fructose well from the gut and those who might need to restrict carbohydrates while dealing with certain types of infection or microbial imabalance, and I would add to the list of biochemical fates for this molecule the slow trickle of glucose into the blood that follows its ingestion.

Enjoy!

  1. Chris,
Great interview. You wrote "those who might need to restrict carbohydrates while dealing with certain types of infection or microbial imbalance". What would be the best way to restore proper gut balance and heal gut dysbiosis? Probiotics? Prebiotics? Actual drugs like antibiotics and antifungals? I know you can't prescribe actual specific recommendations over the internet but what would your general recommendation or theory be for people suffering from either gut dysbiosis or perhaps "candida".

  2. Hi Chris,

Thanks! I think it depends on the situation and the person. Antifungals, whether natural or synthetic, are generally quite toxic compared to antibiotics. But some combination of all of those is likely to be best.

  3. What's your view on probiotics in general Chris? I've kind of fallen under the "you don't really need supplements if your diet in completely dialed" paradigm, but I'm in no way sure of this view.

Probiotics, fish oil and vitamin D are the main supplements I've seen supported by people I trust regarding health. I'm curious as to your point of view.

  4. I think probiotics are useful depending on the context, but they differ wildly in their efficacy and the appropriate ones might be highly individualized. I've had the most success with Primal Defense, although after their formula change years ago, it seems only Primal Defense Ultra has similar efficacy to the original for me.

  5. Thanks Chris. Personally I rarely notice differences in how I feel when taking supplements. I guess that's because I'm still young and healthy.

  7. Hi Chris,

I tried to send you a private message through the link at Contact at Cholesterol-and-health but it didn't go through so I will try to do it here.
I'm sorry all for the off-topic.

I would like to apologise to Melissa for writing a comment that seemingly hurt her and for which she consequently banned me from posting on her site. I didn't think I was rude.

    Thank you.

  8. It is a pleasure to hear your voice again. I am particularly impressed with your discussion of dietary dogmatism. Sometimes I think the identification of self with an eating plan is where people get into trouble; whether it's veganism, zero carb or anything in between.

Anyway, I think you came across quite well overall, especially considering you gave the interview on such little sleep. Cheers!
