Cod Liver Oil Interview With Our Natural Life

Our Natural Life posted a one-hour interview with me on the subject of cod liver oil:

The Science of Cod Liver Oil — Interview With Chris Masterjohn

We just recorded a one-hour interview on cholesterol last night and I'll post that once it's up.

  1. Hi Chris,
Have you ever come across Ray Peat's work on PUFAs and his suggestion to not consume any of it even cod liver oil? What do you think about that?

Another question, whenever I eat a dinner high in fat from coconut, nuts, or broth, I scratch my scalp a lot while I'm sleeping and wake up with a lot of skin cells under my nails in the morning. Has any one else commented on this issue. In spite of this one concern, following this low processed diet has improved my life in all facets. So I thank you for all the time put into getting this info out to the public.

  2. Hi Danh,

I don't know what could be responsible for the scalp issue. I agree with Ray Peat that it is harmful to consume too much of the omega-3 PUFAs, but I think it is good and beneficial to consume small amounts, like 250 mg/day. High-vitamin cod liver oil allows you to get the vitamins without overdosing on the PUFAs.

  3. Hi Chris

Long time reader, first post. Enjoy your blog and Stephans very much and appreciate the effort from both of you.

Just a query .. I supplement with Melrose (Australia) standard Cod Liver Oil, as does my daughter who is breastfeeding her 6 week old daughter.

We take approx 15ml (a tablespoon) daily, equating to approx 10,000iu vitA and 1280iu D3 (8:1) and 2400mg omega 3.

You mention 250mg/day omega 3 as a a guide, my concern now is that we (particularly considering the breastfeeding aspect) are overdoing it - we both have very low intakes of omega 6.

  4. The omega-3 found in flax seed oil is ALA. And some believe that flax seed oil can provide cod liver oil benefits, without the risks, but this is debatable. Although there are no risks associated with flax seed oil, it is unknown if ALA provides the same health benefits as DHA and EPA.
